Do I need that ethics class?

Simply:

  • Yes, if you are a REALTOR.
  • No, if you are not a REALTOR.

Realtors pay dues to the National Association of Realtors (NAR) and a state and local chapter. Not every broker is a Realtor.

Beginning in 2017, Realtors must complete at least 2.5 hours of Code of Ethics training every two years, with the most current deadline of December 31, 2018.

But remember, the ethics course is a requirement only for Realtors.  Not every real estate licensee is a Realtor. If you are not a member of the National Association of Realtors, your only requirement is the appropriate Update course and any approved elective course.

The NAR code of ethics course can be taken online for FREE via the NAR website (www.realtor.org) or you can take an approved four-hour ethics course and also obtain CE elective credit in NC.

You can certainly take the Everyday Ethics  (print-based) , Staying on the Right Path, or Scruples (video-based),online courses that count for elective credit AND NAR credit.

Call your location Association of Realtors for clarification if you have questions.
